I've been talking with my D.S. the past 3 days and it seems that I'm not moving this year. The wife and kids are happy and I'm looking forward to the new possibilities. I feel in a pinch with trying to get the NCD survey put together but this will work out.
I do have some questions about the Joel Council. Hawarden UMC tends to be a very traditional minded church and I can't help think that they will be suspicious of the Joel Council. I can also imagine that they might say that this falls under the work of the SPPRC. In addition, the UMW has had a death grasp on most ministry planning. This started to change about 8 years ago but they still like to, "monitor," the planning process and have been known to be a wet blanket from time to time. They also hold the opinion that they should be represented on every committee. I would welcome any and all suggestions.

As far as Joel Council, maybe you could talk to the Ad council and explain what the Joel Council is so it's not a secretive meeting. I do think you should pick who you you feel comfortable visioning with and not feel like you have to have a UMW rep. Aren't those UMW fun? At every church they seem to have such a control over church activities.
Good luck, Tim!!!
I personally don't mind giving the UMW the kitchen... most of them furnished it anyway... but they don't have any place being "represented" on all church boards and agencies. Women who are members of the UMW may serve in many postitions in the church, but not as representatives of the organization; not in such a way as to report back to the unit.
Can you tell I've had some differences of opinion with some UMW units? The United Mine Workers can't hold a candle to the strength of this organization when it gets off its stated path of mission. [Now don't get me wrong. I have the greatest admiration for the organization and what it can accomplish in MISSION and in making women aware of issues facing women and children around the world. It is the tyranical wield some units have in churches that offends me.] I'll keep your unit in my prayers, as well.
Hang in there, Tim! You might let the church know that the Joel Council connects to your work with the Academy. You are not trying to take power or responsibility away from others. You are trying to create a structure that can positively impact your ministry in the church. Blessings, Scott
